Earlier this week, I met some prospective parents with whom we discussed the importance of investing in early learning for our children rather than simple childcare.

We discussed the power of phonics in developing reading confidence and reading for pleasure, about which I had written last week, and research cited by Professor Rastle that phonics performance in Year 1 is the strongest predictor of reading comprehension in Year 5.
